Coming ‘Home’ to Zambia: Why Some Journeys Heal More Than Others

June 11, 2026

I lived in Kabwe, Zambia (then known as Broken Hill) for around fifteen years.

When I think back to my childhood, I remember attending Jacaranda Trust School. We were divided into three school teams: Kafue (Blue), Zambezi (Red), and Luangwa (Yellow).

At the time, they were simply names.
Today, they feel like a thread connecting my past to my present.

Many years later, I find myself staying on the banks of the Kafue River in Kafue National Park, one of Africa’s most remarkable wilderness areas. Standing here, surrounded by the sounds, colours and rhythms of Zambia, memories I didn’t even know I’d stored away are resurfacing.
The languages unlock something familiar. The scent of the bush feels like home.
The landscape awakens memories that have been quietly waiting for years.

And then there is the sky. If you’ve ever experienced an African sunrise or sunset, you’ll understand.
The colours don’t simply appear; they perform.

If you know me you have seen me, pointing excitedly towards the horizon and shouting,

“LOOK AT THE SKY!”
I’m fairly certain I’m driving everyone around me mad. But I can’t help it. There is something
profoundly healing about witnessing nature on this scale. The sunrise arrives gently.
The sunset lingers. The stars remind you how small your worries really are.

What surprises me most is how deeply restorative this experience has been. I feel a sense of calm and contentment that is difficult to describe. It’s as though my nervous system has finally remembered how to exhale.

Travel can be many things.
It can be adventure.
It can be luxury.
It can be discovery.
But sometimes travel is something far more important.
Sometimes it is a return to yourself.

At Peku Peku Travel, we believe the most meaningful journeys aren’t measured by kilometres
travelled but by how deeply they reconnect us to nature, to culture, to memory, and
to ourselves.

Zambia has a way of doing exactly that.

And if you’re lucky, all it takes is one sunrise to remember who you are.
